June 19, 2007: Nytheatre.com review:

New York-

LEE/GENDARY by Soomi Kim

NYTHEATER.COM: Yin and Yang battle it out for control of martial arts legend Bruce Lee's soul in Soomi Kim and Derek Nguyen's excellent new play, Lee/gendary. Set inside the action movie superstar's mind, Lee/gendary takes the audience on a hallucinatory trek through its namesake's short but fast life as he tries to find a harmonious balance between fame and enlightenment (i.e., Yin and Yang). It's a fascinating journey that is punctuated in director Suzi Takahashi's production by a dynamic performance by Kim as Bruce Lee.

Wait a minute: a woman plays Bruce Lee? Oh, you betcha. And, let me tell you: she kicks ass (if you'll pardon my French).

Lee/gendary traces Lee's beginnings as a proverbial 98-pound weakling all the way through to his international stardom, with all the requisite trials and tribulations along the way. Partially raised by his parents as a girl—he was given a girl's name at birth (Sai Fung, which means "small phoenix"), and had a pierced ear in his youth—Lee overcame peer pressure and school bullies by learning martial arts and becoming a skilled combatant. He then embarked on an iconic crossover acting career that encompassed American television (The Green Hornet) and global film stardom (Enter the Dragon). He also became a poster child for ideal physical fitness, invented his own martial arts system, and trained high profile celebrities like Steve McQueen and James Coburn (Played here by the versatile James Huffman) .

But, Lee had his share of troubles. Even though he was a dedicated family man, there were rumors of a longtime extra-marital affair with Taiwanese actress Betty Ting Pei as well as drug abuse. Lee/gendary addresses it all with style and panache.

Kim and Nguyen piece the show together through a tapestry of dance, movement, found and scripted text, and combat. There's a canny reenactment of Lee's television interview with Canadian broadcaster Pierre Berton (Also played by James Huffman) in which the star smoothly expresses his desire to have it all. Later in the play, Lee surprisingly tells the audience that he will always stay by his wife's side, but that Betty Ting Pei "will always be the one who makes me feel like a man." The creators also make Lee's Yin and Yang characters in the play who vie for the protagonist's attention throughout. Lee/gendary culminates in a spectacular fight scene in which Lee must battle one of them—and, in essence, himself—quite literally to the death.

The fights themselves are quite impressive, as the company has reconstructed them straight from Lee's movies. Takahashi adds a splendid humorous element by making the cast lip-synch to the dialogue and music soundtrack from the films themselves. Highlights include Lee's single-handed thrashing of a group of thugs from The Chinese Connection, and his infamous battle royale with Kareem Abdul-Jabaar from Game of Death.

Then, there is Kim, who is outstanding as Lee. Hers is a convincing performance of rigorous physicality and impressive commitment. She scores big points in the case for non-traditional gender casting by showing that the key to such successes lies in having the right attitude. Oh boy, does she have the attitude! As Lee himself says early in the play, "Champions are made from something inside them." Kim's performance proves that.

nytheatre.com review

Susan Rankus · August 12, 2006

Light & Love, written and directed by S.P. Riordan and presented by Moving Faces, is a dramatic look at a new controversial religion and the effects of its questionable ideology on its flock. This new religion is called Illuminology. This group believes light is simply all we need and that western evils, such as modern psychiatry and prescription medication, are forbidden as they are extinguishing the light. Can we truly say goodbye to our vices, stop taking our medicine, and finally see the light? What causes us to believe with fervor certain tenets of our chosen religions and completely ignore others? Especially when our individual happiness, peace of mind, acceptance, and most importantly our well being are put in direct exposure?

The story centers on Kath and Van, two people in separate locations who have agreed to be questioned about a recent tragedy. Their stories intermingle to reveal their involvement in the cult-like religious movement of Illuminology. The pair's charismatic friend Sully is a true believer, and soon entangles the two within the inner circle of the church.

This piece has a great deal of potential. The subject matter is very interesting and not a topic that is covered a great deal. It's fascinating to see why and how one could become involved in a cult. It is also intriguing to see the inner workings and the points of view of people who believe things that may seem ridiculous to others.

Dan Dominigues, who plays both the Interviewer and Sully, has a natural charisma that draws you in. Jessica Ripton is very realistic as Kath. James Huffman is sympathetic as Van. Riordan's staging and writing is very economical in the way he designs both interviews to occur simultaneously. A majority of the play is just monologues, which is a very tricky thing to do. I would like to have seen the story physically acted out more and seen the characters experience the events almost as if they were happening for the first time. It's hard for an audience to go on a journey with the characters if the characters aren't fully on a journey themselves. But overall, Light & Love has great possibilities—and a shocking ending that you won't see coming.

Light & Love is a satirical look at the influences modern day religions have on their flock. Kath and Van are two souls in search of themselves and their purpose. Along the way they stumble upon a new understanding called Illuminology. Illuminology teaches its congregation of the indescribable force Light has on all of us. Light is quite simply all we need. Can we live without our western evils and simply succumb to the Light? That is the question. You be the judge. Illiminology. The Light you save may be your own.

Tuesday Feb 28th, 2006: ProActive has arrived!

For Immediate Release

A screening of short films created by members of New York's

PRO
fessional ACTors collectIVE

Press Contact:
Don Downie
(917) 687-5650
scenepartners@verizon.net

DESCRIPTION:
On Monday, February 27th, the Brass Monkey Bar in Manhattan’s ultra cool Meatpacking District was transformed into a screening room for some truly unique short films.  Stop, Drop, & Roll was a screening of eleven inventive, entertaining, and fun short films, featuring performances by 26 of New York’s most PROACTIVE actors. The films were created on a single day of each calendar month in 2005 (with November off for good behavior), as part of the PROACTIVE Monthly Film program.

The event, sponsored by Newcastle Brown Ale, was attended by over 150 people, packing out the bar and far exceeding the expectations of the producers.  Attendees included many actors, filmmakers, and VIP’s from New York’s entertainment industry.  Companies that sent representatives to the screening included NBC, CBS, The Weinstein Company, Binder Casting, and Beth Melsky Casting

Stop, Drop, & Roll
was not only the world premiere for each of the shorts, but also represents a convergence of the city’s acting and filmmaking communities. The shorts screened were written, produced, directed, and shot by members of New York’s prestigious PROfessional ACTors collectIVE, as part of an experiment in giving actors creative control over film projects.  The actors quite literally called the shots, collaborating with filmmakers who were willing to take direction from actors, instead of vice-versa.

The
PROACTIVE Monthly Film program was an initiative of PROfessional ACTors collectIVE, in which the group resolved to shoot a different short film on a single day of each calendar month of 2005.  Members pooled resources and contacts to help one another to produce these films.

The goal of the program was to empower and equip member actors to use the tools of low-cost digital filmmaking to create actor-driven projects.  The resulting films are unique in that they showcase the actors’ skills in roles of their own creation.  In making the shorts, members gained significant filmmaking experience and expanded their contacts into NYC’s vibrant film community.

As a result of the
PROACTIVE Monthly Film program, not only were eleven films created, but also three new film production companies were brought into existence, and relationships were forged that have contributed to many other projects.

Review: "Fish Bowl," by Eric Miles Glover, NEWTHEATERCORPS.COM

Berman and Pitkin use Fish Bowl to show how the American public has become complicit in the endorsement of television programming like Wife Swap, Extreme Makeover, Average Joe, and American Idol. That the ridiculousness of Fish Bowl causes laughter on the part of the viewer shows how he has become disillusioned, and that is an achievement on its own.

Review: “Fish Bowl” by Gwen Orel, BACKSTAGE.COM

Subtitled "a play on reality," Fish Bowl, doesn't really plumb the depths (as it were) of nonfiction fiction, but there's a happy, talented mob (cast of 12) on stage that compensates well for the opportunity missed.

Review: “Fish Bowl: Reality TV Parodied – Again”, by Elizabeth Devlin, NEWTHEATERCORPS.COM

The production is not without merit, however, as the cast does manage to provide entertainment with caricatures of reality show “stars” we love to hate...Perhaps more die-hard fans of reality TV would see more in this show than I did. The technical aspects and talent will, however, keep me on the lookout for the next production of the I Ate What? Theatre Company.

Review: FISHBOWL by Evan Robert Pohl, NEWTHEATERCORPS.COM

Much to the delight of the audience there are no lengths to which Berman and Pitkin won’t let their bevy of characters go...By turns equally wild and over-the-top as the last, FISHBOWL is a cautionary tale against our popular tastes and current trend in entertainment television.
